Technology Access

Technology access for UCSC students
Technology plays a critical role in supporting academic engagement and success. UCSC offers a range of services to help students stay connected, including laptop loan programs, access to computer labs, and tools for remote learning. These resources are here to ensure that students have the technological support they need—on campus and beyond.

On-campus technology resources
UCSC Library computers
Current UCSC students, faculty, and staff can borrow Dell laptops and Chromebooks from the Circulation Desks at both the Science & Engineering Library and McHenry Library. Devices are available on a first-come, first-served basis, with the option to reserve a laptop up to one day in advance by visiting the Circulation Desk at your preferred library location. Each person may check out one laptop at a time.
Computer labs
Computer labs are available to current UCSC students for drop-in use. Lab computer platforms include Macintosh, Windows, and Unix (Linux). In some locations, computer labs are equipped with specialized instructional technology equipment (HD data projectors, scanners, and video editing stations).
Laptop kiosks
Self-service kiosks at McHenry Library and the Science & Engineering Library. Check out Dell Windows laptops or power banks for academic use by students.
Off-campus technology resources
Notebooks for Students
Notebooks for Students (NFS) was formed in 1998 by college students and faculty of California State University, Northridge. The program offers discounts on new, factory-refurbished, and NFS certified off-lease laptops for students, along with warranties.
Low-cost internet
UC Santa Cruz has partnered with Cruzio to provide qualifying students in the Santa Cruz area with access to low-cost internet service. If you’re interested in participating, the Dean of Students Office can help refer you to the program.
Please note: This service requires equipment installation, so approval from your landlord may be necessary.
How to get started
- Preferred contact method: Email the Dean of Students Office at deanofstudents@ucsc.edu.
- Alternative contact method: Call (831) 459-4446 and leave a detailed voicemail with your name, student ID number, and a phone number where you can be reached.
Affordable Connectivity Program
The Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) is a Federal Communications Commission initiative designed to help low-income households afford internet service and devices.
Students who participate in programs like Pell Grant, CalFresh, WIC, or SNAP are eligible for ACP benefits, which include:
- Up to $30/month discount on home internet service from participating Internet Service Providers
- A one-time discount of up to $100 toward the purchase of a laptop, desktop computer, or tablet
To check eligibility and apply, visit the FCC ACP website.
